PREVENDO PRÓXIMA A MORTE
40. PREFÁCIO. A fé no futuro, a orientação do pensamento, durante a vida, para os destinos vindouros, favorecem e aceleram o desligamento do Espírito, por enfraquecerem os laços que o prendem ao corpo, tanto que, freqüentemente, a vida corpórea ainda se não extinguiu de todo, e a alma, impaciente, já alçou o vôo para a imensidade. Ao contrário, no homem que concentra nas coisas materiais todos os seus cuidados, aqueles laços são mais tenazes, penosa e dolorosa é a separação e cheio de perturbação e ansiedade o despertar no além-túmulo.
41. PRECE. Meu Deus, creio em ti e na tua bondade infinita e, por isso mesmo, não posso crer hajas dado ao homem a inteligência, que lhe faculta conhecer-te, e a aspiração pelo futuro, para o mergulhares no nada.
Creio que o meu corpo é apenas o envoltório perecível de minha alma e que, quando eu tenha deixado de viver, acordarei no mundo dos Espíritos.
Deus Todo-Poderoso, sinto se rompem os laços que me prendem a alma ao corpo e que dentro em pouco irei prestar contas do uso que fiz da vida que me foge.
Vou experimentar as conseqüências do bem e do mal que pratiquei. Lá não haverá ilusões, nem subterfúgios possíveis. Diante de mim vai desenrolar-se todo o meu passado e serei julgado segundo as minhas obras.
Nada levarei dos bens da Terra. Honras, riquezas, satisfações da vaidade e do orgulho, tudo, enfim, que é peculiar ao corpo permanecerá neste mundo. Nem a mais mínima parcela de todas essas coisas me acompanhará, nem me será de utilidade alguma no mundo dos Espíritos. Apenas levarei comigo o que pertence à alma, isto é, as boas e as más qualidades, para serem pesadas na balança da mais rigorosa justiça. E tanto maior severidade haverá no meu julgamento, quanto maior número de ocasiões para fazer o bem, que não fiz, me tenha proporcionado a posição que ocupei na Terra. (Cap. XVI, n° 9.)
Deus de misericórdia, que o meu arrependimento te chegue aos pés! Digna-te de lançar sobre mim o manto da tua indulgência.
Se te aprouver prolongar a minha existência, seja esse prolongamento empregado em reparar, tanto quanto em mim esteja, o mal que eu tenha praticado. Se soou, sem dilação possível, a minha hora, levo comigo o consolador pensamento de que me será permitido redimir-me, por meio de novas provas, a fim de merecer um dia a felicidade dos eleitos.
Se não me for dado gozar imediatamente dessa felicidade sem mescla, partilha tão-só do justo por excelência, sei que me não é defesa para sempre a esperança e que, pelo trabalho, alcançarei o fim, mais tarde ou mais cedo, conforme os meus esforços.
Sei que próximos de mim, para me receberem, estão Espíritos bons e o meu anjo de guarda, aos quais dentro em pouco verei, como eles me vêem. Sei que, se o tiver merecido, encontrarei de novo aqueles a quem amei na Terra e que aqueles que aqui deixo irão juntar-se a mim, que um dia estaremos todos reunidos para sempre e que, enquanto esse dia não chegar, poderei vir visitá-los.
Sei também que vou encontrar aqueles a quem ofendi. Possam eles perdoar-me o que tenham a reprochar-me: o meu orgulho, a minha dureza, minhas injustiças, a fim de que a presença deles não me acabrunhe de vergonha!
Perdôo aos que me tenham feito ou querido fazer mal, nenhum rancor contra eles alimento e peço-te, meu Deus, que lhes perdoes.
Senhor, dá-me forças para deixar sem pena os prazeres grosseiros deste mundo, que nada são em confronto com as alegrias sãs e puras do mundo em que vou penetrar e onde, para o justo, não há mais tormentos, nem sofrimentos, nem misérias, onde somente o culpado sofre, mas tendo a confortá-lo a esperança.
A vós, bons Espíritos, e a ti, meu anjo guardião, suplico que me não deixeis falir neste momento supremo. Fazei que a luz divina brilhe aos meus olhos, a fim de que a minha fé se reanime, se vier a abalar-se.
