O rei procurava explicações para suas aflições e, nas palavras de sabedoria do Ministro, encontrava conforto para seu coração.
Certo dia, enquanto se distraía, em sua oficina, esculpindo um pedaço de madeira, o rei sofreu um acidente que lhe decepou o dedo indicador.
Desesperado e aflito, buscou o Primeiro Ministro para que lhe explicasse o motivo pelo qual Deus havia permitido que isso acontecesse com ele, uma pessoa boa, justa e honesta.
Para sua surpresa, em vez de confortá-lo, o sábio limitou-se a repetir:
Tudo que Deus faz é bom.
O rei, irado e desconsolado, mandou que os guardas o levassem para a prisão.
Depois disso, sua vida ficou diferente.
Não tinha ninguém com quem pudesse confidenciar pensamentos e, suas cavalgadas, pela manhã, se tornaram solitárias.
Num desses dias, em que se distanciou em demasia, foi aprisionado por selvagens.
Chegando à tribo, viu o monarca como tudo se encaminhava para um grande sacrifício aos deuses.
Enquanto estava sendo preparado, o feiticeiro da tribo se aproximou dele e percebeu que ele não possuía um dos dedos da mão.
De imediato, ordenou que tudo fosse suspenso e que o prisioneiro fosse libertado.
Um ser incompleto, como aquele, não poderia ser oferenda digna para os deuses.
Em seu retorno ao castelo, enquanto caminhava pela floresta, pensava sobre o que havia acontecido.
Realmente, tudo que Deus faz é bom.
Se não tivesse perdido um dedo, teria perdido a vida.
Uma questão, porém, ainda lhe perturbava a mente: o que explicaria a permanência do seu fiel Primeiro Ministro na prisão, durante todo aquele tempo?
Seria esse Deus justo apenas para com quem comandava o reino e não para com Seus súditos?
Ordenando que o Primeiro Ministro fosse solto e trazido à sua presença, pediu que ele lhe explicasse o motivo pelo qual Deus havia sido tão injusto para com ele, homem tão bondoso.
Como permitira que fosse aprisionado?
Agora compreendo, disse o soberano, que perdi um dedo mas, em compensação, não perdi a minha vida.
No entanto, não entendo por que Deus não foi benevolente com você.
